CA History Reflection

When California became part of the United States in 1850, life changed very quickly. After the Gold Rush began in 1848, thousands of people traveled to California hoping to find gold and start new lives. New towns, businesses, roads, and farms were built, and California’s population grew fast. The government changed from Mexican rule to U.S. rule, and California followed American laws, schools, and traditions as it became the 31st state.

The people most affected by these changes were Native Americans, Californios (Mexican families already living in California), and the people who had lived there long before the United States took control. Many Native Americans lost their land, homes, and important parts of their culture. Some were forced to work or move away from their communities. Californios also lost land and political power as more American settlers arrived. While many new settlers saw California as a place of opportunity, the changes were very difficult for many of the people who already lived there.
